Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced a dual-output, fully synchronous SWIFT power management integrated circuit. The TPS54290 1.5A/2.5A converter simplifies power design in consumer electronics with a 12V power supply, such as a set top box or digital TV. The device operates from a 4.5 to 18V input supply voltage, and supports output voltages as low as 0.8V with a 90% power efficiency rating. The device is set at a fixed frequency of 300kHz. Two other family members, the TPS54291 and TPS54292, provide switching frequencies of 600kHz and 1.2MHz, further reducing the DC/DC solution size. Dual output synchronous buck converter with four integrated MOSFETs provides fully synchronous conversion with high efficiency and utilises reduced board space. The current mode control simplifies external compensation, giving the designer flexibility when choosing different types of output capacitors. The 180º out-of-phase operation minimises ripple current through the input capacitor. Reduced input capacitance helps to lessen electromagnetic interference.
