6A step-down regulators include power MOSFETs

1- MHz or 4-MHz switching frequency options

EDN Europe, 28 Sep 2007

28th September 2007 – Claimed to be the smallest available 6-A synchronous buck converters, Micrel’s MIC2260x series parts, for 3V and 5V supply rails, operate at 1MHz (MIC22600) or at 4 MHz (MIC22601). They have built-in sequencing, tracking and ramp control for power-up sequencing and tracking protocols, and area aimed at functions such as core-voltage supplies for processors and FPGAs. The chips have integrated 30-mOhm P-FET and 25-mOhm N-FET switches that deliver a 6A output current with an input voltage range of 2.6-5.5V. The devices have an adjustable output voltage down to 0.7V and provide efficiencies of up to 93% (at 5V in, 3.3V out and 1A output current). They have fast transient response, thermal shutdown and current limit protection, and require a minimum of external passive components: loop compensation uses a single capacitor and Micrel designed them to use ceramic output capacitors. The high switching frequency allows designers to use small inductors in the range 0.47 to 4.7 μH. The ICs are available in a 24-pin 4mm x 4mm MLF and cost $2.68 for 10K quantities.
