Agilent Technologies has announced that the measurement bandwidth on its PXA Signal Analyser instrument can now be extended to 140 MHz, if you previously bought the top-of-the-line version with 140 MHz bandwidth. This is significant, the company says, because 160 MHz is needed to develop the forthcoming IEEE802.11ac wireless LAN standard, that aims eventually to provide over-the-air data rates reaching up to over 6 Gbps. If your PXA is the 140-MHz bandwidth version, it will support the upgrade with only a (chargeable) software update and licence key. Agilent says that experience with PXAs now in the field has provided confidence that the 140-MHz performance specification is conservative, and that production variations on the instruments are low enough that the 160-MHz figure can be used without further hardware changes.
