ARM’s Cortex-M1 – now on Altera

Development kit targets M1 core at Cyclone (and Stratix?)

EDN Europe, 21 Sep 2007

ARM has announced the Cortex-M1 Development Kit, for Altera Cyclone III FPGAs. Using the kit, you will be able to design the M1 core into an FPGA-based system-on-chip using mainstream tool flows from both companies: Altera’s Quartus II design software and SOPC Builder tool, and ARM’s software development environment. The kit includes an encrypted version of the M1 processor and a special edition of RealView. ARM optimized the M1 processor for implementation on FPGAs – it is a three-stage 32-bit RISC processor that implements a subset of the high density Thumb-2 instruction set. ARM's announcement cites the Cyclone III as a target - as the Cyclone is essentially a reduced-feature-set-Stratix, you may also be able to develop with the Stratix III family as a target. The kit integrates ARM RealView Compilation Tools and the Keil µVision3 development environment. The Cortex-M1 Development Kit will be available in Europe in Q4 2007 through Arrow Electronics.
