Demo kit incorporates ambient light and proximity functions

EDN Europe, 25 May 2011

Vishay Intertechnology has released a demo kit for the VCNL4000 integrated proximity and ambient light optical sensor. Featuring a VCNL4000 sensor mounted on a PCB with a USB interface and demonstration software, the kit seamlessly evaluates the device for its applications. The optical sensor combines an IR emitter, proximity photodiode, ambient light detector, signal processing IC, and an I2C bus communication interface in a 3.95x3.95x0.75mm leadless surface-mount package. The demo kit software has an interface panel for the ambient light function and the other interface panel for the proximity function. The company claims that designers can test different housing or window materials to determine the change in sensitivity or output of the sensor. The proximity function software adjusts the emitter current, sampling rate, sampling mode, and output unit of measure. It includes automatic noise and offset compensation, and offers two displays to show the full dynamic range and active dynamic range of the sensor output.
The ambient light function software has an adjustable sampling rate and sampling mode, and an automatic adjustment feature for temperature-related drift. It also has two displays to show the full dynamic range and active dynamic range of the sensor output. For mobile devices such as smartphones, touch phones, personal digital assistant, global positioning system units, and digital cameras, the optical sensor saves power as a proximity sensor for touch screen on/off control.
