Dragonfire reference design gets BSP

Development tools host Java, quickly build GUIs

EDN Europe, 03 Aug 2007

3rd August 2007 – EBV Elektronik and Domologic have announced an additional board support package (BSP) for the Freescale-MPU-based DragonFire reference design. With this package based on JControl technology, applications for the COBRA5329 board can now be performed in JAVA simplifying development of graphical user interfaces. The ‘COBRA5329’ reference board uses MCF5329 (DragonFire) 32-bit ColdFire microprocessor, with the V3-Core/240MHz, designed for monitoring and control applications with built-in graphics such as measuring devices or control terminals. All members of the family have an SVGA LCD controller, USB host and USB on-the-go, an SDRAM controller for two memory banks, a 16-channel DMA controller, three UARTs, a queued-SPI interface and other peripheral elements. The COBRA5329 has 16 Mbytes of SDRAM, 16 Mbytes flash, various interfaces (RS232, Ethernet, etc.) and a power-over-Ethernet interface.
JControl features short start time, low system requirements, high degree of scalability as well as easy adaptability to other display technologies. EBV says that the COBRA5329 requires less than 2 seconds with JControl to finish setting up the graphic user interface after being powered up, and fast switch times from one monitor to another.
The development environment JControl/IDE runs on Windows and Linux and inlcudes a built-in simulation environment, editors for fonts (with support for non-Roman languages such as Chinese and Japanese) as well as pictures and music. Also included is an optional, easy-to-use editor that enables GUIs to be created within a matter of minutes. New graphic components can be added, scaled, coloured-in, written, etc., with no more than a few clicks of the mouse. A demonstration version is available for download.
