Dual synchronous buck regulator

EDN Europe, 25 Mar 2010

Intersil’s ISL8088 dual, synchronous buck provides high-power conversion efficiency and low quiescent current in a small package. The device is an 800mA/channel dual step-down regulator with integrated power MOSFETs. The 2.7 to 5.5V input voltage range and 35µA quiescent current make the device suitable for battery powered and other “Green Power” applications. The selectable operation between forced PWM mode and automatic PWM/PFM mode maximises battery life. Featuring a switching frequency of 2.25MHz, along with internal digital soft-start and internal compensation, the device can reduce total component count, cost and overall size for a range of applications. External synchronisation capability up to 4MHz reduces beat frequencies in multiple IC systems. Independent Enable and PowerGood signals for both channels provide inherent sequencing capability in a multi-chip system. Protection features include peak current limiting, short circuit protection, and thermal shutdown for reliable operation under adverse conditions. The device is designed for a range of products including digital cameras, personal media players, printers, copiers, storage drives, LCD-TVs, set-top boxes, graphics cards, and automotive applications. The device is available in compact, space-saving 10-lead DFN packages.
