Plessey Semiconductors and health-system provider Aventyn have disclosed that Plessey’s EPIC sensor technology will be used to non-intrusively capture ECG (electrocardiogram) signals for Aventyn’s mobile monitoring device for patients with heart failure. Plessey’s Electric Potential Integrated Circuit (EPIC) sensors detect electric field variations across physical boundaries; configured as ECG sensors the technology provides a resolution as good as or better than conventional electrodes, the company says. Compared to conventional ECG sensors they are dry-contact so that no gels or similar fluids are required to make contact, and can be cleaned and re-used rather than being disposable. A pair of EPIC sensors yields good ECG data, reducing the need for multipoint ECG measurements. Aventyn will use the EPIC sensor integrated in a mobile platform to capture non-intrusive ECG measurements personalised to individual heart failure patients. The measured ECG data is displayed on the patient smartphone device and integrated with a software application for remote monitoring and chronic disease management.
