Fibre channel transceiver for storage networking

EDN Europe, 23 Aug 2011

Avago Technologies has announced the availability of a 16Gbit fibre channel transceiver with signaling rates up to 14.025Gbd (gigabaud). The AFBR-57F5PZ SFP+ (small form-factor pluggable) transceivers support serial links over multimode optical fibre with double the data throughput of existing 8Gbit fibre channel modules, claims the company. The modules address the 16Gbit fibre channel switches, routers, host bus adapters, RAID (redundant array of independent disks) controllers, tape drives and video switching, as well as inter-switch and inter-chassis aggregated links. The SFP+ transceiver reduces the number of ports required for inter-switch connectivity and operates at the same power level, claims the company. The SFP+ module’s transmitter and receiver can operate at different data rates, as is often required during fibre channel speed negotiation.

The transceiver incorporates the unparalleled reliability of the company’s 850nm VCSEL (vertical-cavity surface emitting laser) technology and PIN (personal identification number) detector technology. This combination ensures that the multi-rate SFP+ module is compliant with FC-PI-5 and 16/8/4Gbit fibre channel specifications. The module will respond to both rate select pin and control bit inputs, which simplifies fibre channel host auto-negotiation algorithms, layout and software. The module operates from 0 to 70°C and has a voltage of 3.3V ±5%. It is lead-free and RoHS-compliant and the digital diagnostic features are as per SFF-8472 specification. The module also features LC Duplex optical connector interface conforming to ANSI TIA/EIA604-10 (FOCIS 10A) and enhanced EMI performance for high port density applications.
