UltiMod supplies use two front-end AC input options rated at 600 or 1200W, and can accommodate four or six output (DC/DC) modules for a total of up to 12 fully isolated DC outputs ranging from 1.5V to 58V. Efficiency is up to 92%. Excelsys says that it engineered the UltiMod as a development from its existing range of configurable supplies, using conservative design techniques and derating key components such as electrolytic capacitors so as to run them well within their rated parameters, to enable provision of a a 5-year warranty. Similarly, fans are carefully selected and run at constant speed 100% or the time – this extends fan life, the company adds.
You can configure (plug together) an UltiMod supply for yourself, or small quantities can be assembled by Excelsys' distributors and shipped at short notice. Both powerPacs (AC input units) carry dual certification, EN60950 for industrial applications and 2 x MOPP, EN60601-1 3rd Edition for medical applications. The UX4 delivers up to 600W and can be populated with up to 4 powerMods, the UX6 delivers up to 1200W and can be populated with up to 6 powerMods. All UltiMod products can withstand shock >60G, per MIL STD 810G and will start-up at -40ºC.
The supplies can be ordered in three feature and pricing levels; a basic supply, one with a comprehensive suite of control and protection features, and an intermediate level. User configurable functions include local and remote output adjustment, adjustable current limit, alternative current limiting techniques and inhibit/enable functions. In this generation, however, the company has not added digital control loops or digital-bus control, and has selected components that enable it to offer extended-availability guarantees for long-lived end-product applications.
Excelsys says that of its existing configurable supply business, 40% is in medical applications and 40% in industrial equipment, a profile it expects to continue with UltiMod. Rationalisation of component supplies and profilingof the design to its user base
