Flash LED offers new design options for smartphones

Osram Opto Semiconductors has added a new type of LED to its Oslux family. The device aims at flash applications for digital cameras including cameras for wireless handsets. Due to its specific lens shape the LED can be discreetly fitted in the camera. For this reason, design and function of smartphones work together more closely.

Manufacturers of high-end smartphones often have to choose between design and functionality. A particular challenge here is combining the actual camera with the lighting needed. Technical components can look bulky with some cellphone designs. Plus, the recesses in the enclosure also make the device less robust.

With the new Oslux LED for flash applications Osram Opto Semiconductors supports smartphone manufacturers in their attempt to combine shape and function. The device has two chips with 1 square millimeter of light surface each. The light-emitting surface of the rectangular LED is optimized for the optics of the cellphone – the surface is flat and finishes properly with the cover. This means the Oslux LED can be installed inconspicuously in the phone. No additional covers or lenses are necessary. With its symmetrical emission the LED can be installed vertically or horizontally. When switched off, the LED is barely noticeable. When in use, high quality white illuminates the target area.

Thanks to Osram Opto Semiconductor's proprietary UX:3 chip technology, the Oslux LED provides a very consistent illumination for photos. Even at a distance of 1 m a brightness level of 150 lux is achieved. When flashing, the light is evenly distributed and shines into the corners of the rectangular illuminated image. This means no round spot is generated in the center as might occur in conventional flashing. As all the elements of the flash are combined in a single component, the Oslux LED is also easily integrated. Thanks to its compact design, the LED is exceptionally durable and resistant to shocks and vibrations – and its power means it can manage even multiple repeated flashes. The new Oslux joins the current portfolio of flash LEDs with lenses. The Ceramos LED family offers components without lenses.

The color temperature of 4500K is rather neutral between warm white and cold white. The Oslux LED package measures 9.0mm x 6.0mm x 2.9mm.
