Gesture sensor uses 60 GHz radar; Infineon develops devices

Chipmaker Infineon and Google’s R&D team Advanced Technology and Project (ATAP) are jointly developing a radar-based sensor solution for future Human-machine interface solutions. First application examples have been introduced at the Google I/O Developers Conference in San Francisco. The radar chip has been contributed by Infineon.

The sensors to be developed will enable new ways to control portable devices, products with an IoT context as well as cars. The sensor provides Google ATAP and its developer community with a compact and low power implementation suitable for integration and use in both mobile and fixed devices. It is based on Infineon’s advanced 60GHz transceiver technology while integrating RF transceiver, antenna and control electronics in a single package. It enables HMI designers to detect even very subtle finger gestures – a feature that becomes necessary with the introduction of devices that are too small to accommodate a conventional graphical user interface. With this capability, designers can implement virtual control elements such as knobs, buttons or slide bars even on tiny devices.
Infineon said it is working with the Google ATAP team on this radar-based sensor and already provides solutions for wireless communications of the future to other divisions at Google.
