High brightness LED driver platform enables design of ultra-thin displays featuring extended battery life

Semtech Corporation has launched two new devices in the company’s high-brightness LED (HB LED) driver platform.

The SC5014 and SC5014A are 4-channel and 2-channel (respectively), HB LED drivers designed to reduce display thickness in mid-size consumer [sc5014] and industrial displays by enabling the use of tiny inductors, while offering competitive efficiency. Advanced control architecture allows designers to further enhance the efficiency by four percent through the use of a standard inductor.  

Both devices provide extensive control and protection features such as pulse-width modulation (PWM) and I2C-controlled dimming, open/shorted LED, adjustable over-voltage (OVP), over-temperature and under-voltage lock-out (UVLO).

The devices are suitable for supporting LCD display and backlight applications used in ultrabook PCs, all-in-one PCs, monitors, small HDTVs and industrial displays.

The SC5014 and SC5014A, which have a high efficiency of up to 92%, offer a wide VIN range of 4.5 V to 27 V as well as a high VOUT range that is  up to 50 V.

The SC5014 offers 4-ch with up up to 56 LEDs at 120 mA/ch and phase-shifted dimming. The SC5014A features a 2-ch LED driver with up to 28 LEDs at 240mA/ch, non-phase-shifted dimming.
    
The devices have a wide dimming range up to 5000:1 at 200 kHz PWM input

Availability and Pricing

The SC5014 and SC5014A are available immediately in production quantities. The SC5014 (ordering code SC5014MLTRT) and the SC5014A (ordering code SC5014AMLTRT) are both priced at $1.69 each in 3,000 piece lots.
