Integrated voltage regulator offers 97.5% efficiency from 3.5-mm-square PCB area

International Rectifier has introduced the IR3823 SupIRBuck integrated voltage regulator designed for space-constrained, energy efficient netcom, server and storage applications.

The IR3823 delivers up to 3A with high efficiency in an ultra-compact 3.5 x 3.5mm package. Efficiencies in excess of 97.5% are obtainable for designs converting power from a 6V input to a 4.8V output. The high initial efficiency allows switching at up to 1.5 MHz from a 12 V supply to enable a complete 3-A power supply solution in less than 130 mm². Featuring constant frequency and virtually jitter-free operation with synchronisation capability, the new device is suited to noise-sensitive applications, while the higher bandwidth reduces component count to shrink PCB footprint. A tri-level selectable soft-start feature is also offered for ease of sequencing.
The IR3823 features programmable switching frequency from 300 kHz to 1.5 MHz. Other key functions include thermally compensated over-current protection, output over-voltage protection and thermal shutdown.
TheSupIRBuck design tool enables the rapid selection and simulation of selected SupIRBuck products. A SupIRBuck Excel spreadsheet design tool and Icepak thermal model are also available; the IRDC3823 SupIRBuck reference design features the new device.  Pricing for the IR3823 begins at $1.13 (100,000): pricing for the IRDC3823 SupIRBuck reference design starts at $29 per kit.
