Lithium-ion battery protection controller eliminates sense resistors

ON Semiconductor’s LC05111CMT helps reduce charging time of portable electronics with high-precision control of charge/discharge current.

This Lithium-ion battery protection controller for devices such as smartphones and tablets includes analogue circuitry, MOSFET technology, and advanced packaging expertise to incorporate controller and driver functions in a single circuit.

The LC05111CMT enables high-precision current control without using a current detection resistor. The device includes highly accurate detection circuits and detection delay circuits, to prevent batteries from over-charging, over-discharging, over-current discharging, and over-current charging. The high level of integration reduces component count and therefore required board space in the space-constrained battery pack. The company adds that the part “combines technologies to deliver a physically small, yet functionally innovative device that helps reduce charging time and provides multiple levels of protection for the battery charging circuit.” It costs $1.00 (10,000).
