Lumileds raises the bar with the Luxeon T

No binning required, tested at 85°C and the lowest thermal resistance in the industry are the major features of Philips Lumileds' new Luxeon T LED platform. The device is optimized for lumens per watt and designed for a broad range of lighting applications.

"The key point in the design of the new LED family is its very high flux density which makes it ideal for directional applications", explained product line director Kathleen Hartnett. These directional applications include MR16 and PAR retrofit lamps. However, it also makes sense to use it in downlight environments where it earns points against Lumileds' Luxeon Rebel Plus for its better efficiency. And even in troffers, the Luxeon T shines through its high system efficacy and its high lumens per watt, Harnett said. Also the superior thermal efficiency of its package (3 Kelvin per Watt) give the Luxoen T an edge over similar Lumileds products such as the Luxeon 3535/5630.

Since Lumileds controls the entire value chain from epitaxy to packaging and in particular the phospors, the company can ensure tight colour control to within 3-step MacAdams according to SDCM (Standard Deviation of Colour Matching), making binning redundant. It is available in five color temperatures from 2700K to 5000K at 80CRI; at 95 CRI it offers R9 red rendering. Other specifications include a high flux density of 335 lumens from a small 2mm2 source and a forward voltage of only 2.7V - the lowest in the industry, as the company claims. The efficacy of 140 lm/W (at 350mA) is also a top value.

For the time being, the Luxeon T is manufactured and sold as single-emitter device; to a yet undefined later point in time, the company also will offer it in modules. Already earlier, in January 2013, Lumileds wil extend the Luxeon T range to a CRI of 70 - this move is intended to enable system improvements in outdoor and industrial lighting including high-bay and street lighting.
