Phase noise analyser/VCO tester takes measurements to ‘ultrasensitive’ range

The FSWP phase noise analyser and VCO tester, recently announced by Rohde & Schwarz, enables ultrasensitive and ultra-fast phase noise measurements. The R&S FSWP also allows users to very easily measure pulsed sources and residual phase noise of RF components: the instrument can be upgraded to a signal and spectrum analyser.

Users can measure the spectral purity of signal sources such as generators, synthesisers and voltage-controlled oscillators (VCO) more quickly than with any other solution. The high-end instrument covers a frequency range up to 50 GHz with wide dynamic range. The extremely low phase noise of its local oscillator coupled with cross-correlation even makes it possible to easily measure signal sources that in the past required complex test setups or could not be measured at all.

With fully digital signal processing, the R&S FSWP performs complex measurements at the push of a button and has touchscreen operation. It can measure the phase noise of pulsed sources as well as residual phase noise under pulsed conditions. The R&S FSWP is therefore suitable for both aerospace and defence and automotive applications, e.g. for manufacturers of radar components and synthesisers. Thanks to its additional voltage sources, the R&S FSWP can measure VCOs in research and development and, thanks to its high measurement speed, also in production.

The R&S FSWP can be upgraded to a signal and spectrum analyser. Rohde & Schwarz says it is the only manufacturer to offer the combination of both measurement solutions in a single device, as was the case for its predecessor model, the FSUP.

R&S FSWP8 and R&S FSWP26 models for the 8 and 26 GHz frequency ranges will be available from Rohde & Schwarz in late summer 2015; the R&S FSWP50 model for up to 50 GHz in autumn 2015.
