Safety controller board is configurable for varied industrial installations

TTTech Computertechnik (Vienna) has developed a versatile generic safety controller board with two-channel deterministic Ethernet communications interface. Based on components that meet requirements for functional safety and equipped with multiple safety-related I/O interfaces, this board enables the development and production of custom-made safety control solutions.

The board is pre-certified and enables users and system integrators to reduce time-to-market of customer-specific safety controllers in networked applications with high availability. It suits for use in stand-alone applications as well as in networked control systems. A safety controller consists of the generic safety controller board and a customer-specific I/O board.

The safety controller board is equipped with RS232, SPI, CAN and two-channel TTEthernet communications interfaces. It is powered by a dual-core lockstep TMS570 ("Hercules") controller from Texas Instruments, for fail-safe code execution, combined with a Safety Companion Chip to monitor the supply voltage. The interfaces include GPIO, analogue inputs, PWM outputs and advanced I/O functions based on a NHET unit. All interfaces execute diagnosis functions according to IEC 61508 SIL2.

The board comes with certifiable firmware, runtime system and drivers for I/O and network interfaces. A safety manual as well as certification documents for IEC 61508 and related safety standards are available.
