The battery systems, comprising Saft’s SBM nickel-cadmium batteries, will provide up to three hours of autonomous operation for critical safety and control functions at the power plant in the event of an interruption to the main power supply.
The Vinh Tan Power Generation Complex, located on Vietnam’s coast, 250 km northeast of the largest city, Ho Chi Minh City, will play a key role in meeting the growing demand for electricity to support the country’s social and economic development, particularly in Binh Thuan province. The plant is being developed in three phases and will have a total capacity of 4,400 MW. The second phase, with a capacity of 1,200 MW, is currently being constructed as an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract by Shanghai Electric Power Group, China’s largest company specializing in the manufacture of power generation equipment and power station engineering construction. The complx is scheduled to be commissioned in 2014.
For this contract, Saft will supply a total of 14 batteries, comprising hundreds of SBM blocks, to provide a 220 V DC power supply for various UPS systems at the Vinh Tan 2 project including generator units, coal desulphurization and handling systems, utilities, and emergency lighting. The batteries, with nominal capacities from 461 to 1390 Ah, will provide between 1 to 3 hours of autonomy.
Saft SBM pocket-plate block batteries have been developed to offer high performance, ease of installation, minimal maintenance and an optimized TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) in industrial stationary power backup applications. In this installation they will provide Shanghai Electric Power Group with an anticipated service life of over 20 years.
