SON solution for UMTS networks saves time and resources

Celcite Management Solutions has announced COPS-SON™, an intelligent and dynamic closed-loop system for self-organising networks (SON).

COPS-SON is designed to continuously configure, optimise and self-heal mobile networks, ensuring that radio performance always remains at the optimum level and that the best possible end-user experience is achieved. It uses network-proven optimisation techniques to provide the most efficient and cost-effective self-optimising solution available to operators today.

The ever-increasing demand for data services, coupled with the increased complexity of managing multi-technology and multi-vendor networks, is making it more difficult for operators to continually maintain their network performance at optimum levels to ensure improved customer experience of their subscribers. The need to immediately address outages and other critical problems that affect the network is driving the need for innovative solutions such as COPS-SON, which can significantly shorten the time taken to respond with remedial actions.

COPS-SON introduces a new dynamic SON capability to Celcite’s ground-breaking COPS™ optimisation platform for wireless operators. COPS-SON addresses several important functions in the network:

  1. Self-Configuration: Automatically provides parameters for initial start-up and subsequent tuning when integrating new sites;
  2. Self-Optimisation: Addresses on-going network performance issues by providing remedial actions to improve: radio resource management; network retainability; network accessibility; and network performance;
  3. Self-Healing: Detects and compensates for lost coverage resulting in cell outage situations, minimising the negative end user impact.

Automating optimisation using COPS-SON makes it possible for operators to normalize OPEX and to postpone additional CAPEX while keeping pace with rapid growth in subscribers and data traffic. It also allows solutions to be implemented taking advantage of processes that are often too fast, too granular and too complex to permit manual intervention.

COPS-SON utilises and improves upon a range of SON techniques that are proven to work in real network performance improvement projects. These include new and more robust Automatic Neighbour Relations (ANR), Load Balancing (LB), and Self-Healing (SH) algorithms, which have been shown to yield major improvements in KPIs. These algorithms ensure that COPS SON is the most advanced and cost-effective SON solution
