ESS's SABRE9601 promises audiophile quality sound, with parameters such as 122 dB DNR and -117 dB THD, to mobile-device-driven headphones.

Ismosys, ESS Technology’s European representative, has the SABRE9601 headphone amplifier that delivers an unprecedented performance level of 122 dB DNR and -117 dB THD+N. The device is a companion to ESS’s SABRE-2M series of 32-bit DACs, a family of products that has been applied in audiophile-grade mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and digital music players.

Operating from a single +3.3V supply, the SABRE9601 headphone amplifier uses an internal charge pump to produce ground-referenced outputs, eliminating pops and clicks as well as the need for large DC blocking capacitors.

The company says this overcomes a major bottleneck in the audio signal path to deliver the ultimate headphone performance in mobile devices. Ismosys expects to sample the SABRE9601 headphone amplifier in a 20-QFN package in March. Evaluation boards will also be available at that time.
