Octal switch for high-end smartphone applications

Intersil has introduced the ISL54230, an octal switch that is suitable for high-end smartphone applications. The device’s small size and flexible design enables designers to optimise the routing of the many different types of signals in dual-mode, dual-standby operation phones. The ISL54230 is a Quad DPDT (double-pole double-throw) analogue switch that can operate from a single +2.0V to +5.5V supply. It contains eight SPDT (single pole/double throw) switches configured into four DPDT blocks. Each DPDT block is independently controlled by a logic input signal. This flexible configurability provides switching and routing of USB, UART, PCM for Bluetooth Phy, SIM power/data and audio signals between internal chips and external connector pins. The octal switch allows dual baseband chips to access either of two SIM cards while allowing the unused SIM card to be powered down into a zero-power-consumption condition.

Dual USB 2.0 high-speed 2:1 multiplexers provide USB connector access to multiple baseband and multimedia processor chips. To enable SIM card supply line switching, the ISL54230 offers a pair of 1Ohm switches. The switch features high-speed (480Mbit/s) and full-speed (12Mbit/s) signalling capability per USB 2.0. It is compliant with USB 2.0 short-circuit and overvoltage requirements without additional external components. Other features of the switch include high-speed UART and PCM data-line switching; rail-to-rail analogue signal switching; 1.8V logic compatible (+2.7V to +3.6V supply); switch terminals overvoltage protected up to +5.5V; dual output-enable controls increase flexibility and usage by allowing selective shutdown of switches when not in use; and electrostatic discharge capability of more than 8kV on all signal pins protects against ESD damage caused by SIM card insertion and removal. The operating temperature range of the switch is from -40 to +85°C. The switch is available in a 36-bump 2.6x2.6mm WLCSP package. It is also available in and a 32-lead 5x5mm TQFN package in tape and reel option.
