Reference design and wireless sensor network systems run on single AAA battery pack

EDN Europe, 13 Oct 2011

Dialog Semiconductor has announced a SmartPulse IP gateway reference design that enables SmartPulse and other DECT (digital enhanced cordless communications) ULE (ultra low energy) home automation wireless sensor and actuator products to be connected to the web for remote management via smartphones, laptops and tablet PCs. The reference design integrates the company’s SmartPulse SC14CVMDECT wireless base station device and SC14452 VoIP application host processor with 32Mbyte of flash memory, 16Mbyte SDRAM, an Ethernet Phy and Ethernet transformer. Measuring 60x100mm, the reference board is supported by the company’s Rhea µClinux software development environment, which includes web servers, TCP (transmission control protocol) and IP stack, and an SSH (secure shell) server. To further simplify the design process for the latest wireless sensor network systems the company has also announced development kits for the complete family of SmartPulse DECT ULE sensors such as SC14WSMDATA, SC14WSMDECT and base station such as SC14CVMDECT devices, claims the company.

These kits include both devices and software, and are suitable for wireless controlled door locks, smoke alarms, light switches, home appliances and personal security and health-care systems. The low power wireless sensor network devices can run for up to 10 years on a single AAA battery pack; stream 232bit packet data in the 1870 to 1930MHz licensed DECT band; have a 300m range; are self-configuring and require no network planning, according to the company.
