Relays switch 8-GHz signals

Ultra-miniature broadband relays provide surface-mount routing

EDN Europe, 27 May 2008

Teledyne Relays designed its Series GRF312 surface-mount relays to provide a practical surface-mount solution with improved RF switching repeatability over the frequency range DC to 8GHz: the data sheet characterises signal integrity for digital signal rates as high as 12Gbps. The company designed the relay for load-board, attenuator, RF-circuit and signal integrity applications: its features include high resistance to electrostatic discharge (ESD), ground pin configuration options to improve case grounding and high isolation between control and signal paths. The design uses advanced cleaning techniques and gold-plated precious metal alloy contacts for reliable switching and repeatable RF insertion loss: the relays are hermetically sealed to maintain the inert contact switching atmosphere over a long rated life. The relays have 5 or 12 Vdc coils as standard, and employ a uni-frame motor design for high magnetic efficiency and mechanical rigidity, an all resistance welded assembly, and minimum mass components to provide high levels of resistance to shock and vibration.
