The AS5163 by austriamicrosystems is a magnetic rotary-encoder IC that the company designed to satisfy stringent automotive-IC-protection requirements in anglesensing applications. Overvoltage protection is up to +27V, and reverse-polarity protection withstands 18V reverse polarity at the supply pins. The device also has a shortcircuit- monitoring function. Its designers envisage that applications for the chip will include throttle-pedal sensing.

The AS5163 features a single-wire interface that you can confi gure as a 14-bit digital, 12-bit PWM, or ratiometric analogue output. You can also set it to cover any systemspecifi c angle range by setting a start and end position of the rotational movement. The device operates from 40 to +150°C, comes in a TSSOP-14 package and requires a 5V supply.
