Rugged socket for use with silicon USB blades

EDN Europe, 01 Sep 2008

Samtec has introduced its SiliconBlade Socket designed for use with the rugged, small, high performance SiliconDrive II USB Blade, alternative to SD and MMC cards. This system is designed to help save board space in embedded storage system applications. Additional available pins allow several high speed system configurations such as SD, SATA, PCI Express, XAUI or fibre channel. The lightweight, vertical SiliconBlade Socket (SBS Series) offers user-friendly USB Blade insertion and extraction while consuming less PCB space. It features Samtec’s high speed edge rate contact system which is designed for signal integrity with good impedance control and reduced broadside coupling as well as vibration dampening features.

Additional rugged features also help make the SiliconBlade system suitable for military, industrial, and other high reliability applications. Deep polarising guide rails add mechanical support and assure proper USB Blade insertion, while polarising posts add stability and assure proper socket placement. A latching system that solders to the PCB and includes anti-stress features adds socket attachment strength and stability.
