Smart meter reference design

Freescale has introduced a metering reference design that it built on a new microcontroller customised for the electrical metering market. The polyphase reference design, which the company based on its new MCF51EM256 ColdFire MCU, is a cost-optimised implementation of a single-or three-phase smart electrical meter. With a set of integrated peripherals—including a 16-bit analogue-to-digital converter with a programmable delay block, an independent real-time clock with a calendar function, dual secure flash-memory banks, an AMR (automated-meter-reading) interface, and an LCD driver essential for smart-metering applications, the MCF51EM family provides for the low overall system cost that the sector demands.
