Step-down switching regulator withstands 80V transients

EDN Europe, 01 Nov 2009

LT3980 is a 2A, 58-Vin step-down switching regulator with burst-mode operation to maintain quiescent current under 85 µA. The device operates within an input-voltage range of 3.6 to 58V, with overvoltage lockout protection against transients of 80V, making the device suitable for load-dump and cold-crank conditions commonly present in automotive applications. Its internal 3.4A switch can deliver up to 2A of continuous output current at a voltage of 0.79V. Switching frequency is user-programmable from 100 kHz to 2.4 MHz, enabling the designer to increase efficiency while avoiding critical noisesensitive frequency bands.
