Three-axis digital accelerometers

EDN Europe, 01 Feb 2010

STMicroelectronics’ latest threeaxis digital accelerometers combine small footprints with a reduced current consumption and enhanced functionality. Footprint is now as small as 2x2 mm and current consumption is below 10 µA at the sampling rate of 100 Hz. The accelerometers embed features including click and doubleclick recognition, motion-detection/ wake-up, and 4D/6D orientation detection. The accelerometers contain a temperature sensor and three analogue-to-digital converter channels for easy integration with companion chips, such as gyroscopes. Other features include a programmable FIFO (first-in, first-out) and two programmable interrupt signals that enable immediate notification of motion detection, click/double-click events, and other conditions. The new family is pin-to-pin and softwarecompatible with the company’s current 3x3 mm three-axis digital accelerometers, so designers can easily ‘hot swap’ to refresh product lines.
