TI swallows Luminary
More consolidation in the microcontroller business; hard on the heels of the announcement of the forthcoming marriage of Renesas and NEC, we have TI snapping up Luminary Micro. No surprise to see a venture such as Luminary being bought; something of a surprise, perhaps, to see it being bought at a relatively early stage in its development.
Not for the first time, it shows that if you have the resources, then hard times offer opportunities as well as problems. From the design point of view, we now have a formidable array of microcontroller companies offering Cortex-M3-based product and, if ARM’s CMSIS interface-standard initiative delivers on its promises, the prospect of a very hotly-contested market space – and one in which the ever-increasing tech-support role of the distribution companies could play a significant part.
I have, however, to mention the encounter I had with a couple of TI staff members on Wednesday of this week (no names....). It may be that they genuinely knew nothing of this impending deal: on the other hand, if they did, then the adept manner in which they deflected my, “Got any interesting announcements coming up in the near future?” was worthy of an Oscar.
