Two New Power Management ICs from ASIC Advantage Simplify Secondary Feedback and Protection Implemen - Asic Advantage, Inc.

(Product Announcements, 21/1/2008)

Sunnyvale, CA, January 21, 2008 – ASIC Advantage, Inc. announces the introduction of two new Power Management ICs intended to simplify the design of secondary based feedback and protection circuit implementations. As part of ASIC Advantage’s growing family of Feedback and Support ICs for Power Management, its features are ideal for controlling voltage and current on the secondary of an isolated power system. Optimized for minimal power, their typical operating current of 3mA is provided through
a simple pull-up resistor to a secondary voltage for the internal 4V shunt regulator.

Powerful features of the IPS20 and IPS21 include dual error amplifiers provided for monitoring of two signals, with both amplifiers OR’d and sourcing high-side driven opto-coupler for closure of the control loop. The voltage error amplifier internally generated voltage reference is trimmed to 1.20V, with a temperature drift of ± 3 to 6mV over its rated Industrial temperature range of -40ºC to +85ºC. With a unity gain bandwidth of 500kHz and provision of compensation component implementation, it easily supports voltage loop closure on the secondary, sourcing current for the opto-coupler as determined by the resistance connecting the IPS20 or IPS21 to the source voltage. The amplifier can also be used for implementation of an overvoltage protection function, in cases where current regulation is the principal function for secondary regulation.

The second error amplifier of these two ICs, with a 2MHz unity gain bandwidth, is intended to implement either current feedback control or secondary side current limit. The IPS21 internal reference is trimmed to 100mV, with temperature stability to 3µV over the rated industrial temperature range. The IPS20 also has a current limiting error amplifier, but provides a unique additional feature as implemented for the internal reference. It has a lower 50mV reference with unique reference voltage compensation, where the temperature variation is intended match that of the copper trace of a printed-circuit board, used as the current measurement element. This eliminates the need for an additional sense resistor or other measurement component. The applications material and datasheet provide further information regarding the absolute matching of the IPS20 internal current reference voltage to board trace resistance.

Both components are offered in RoHS compliant 8-Pin PDIP or 8-Pin SOIC package options. Pricing in 1k quantities is $0.26 to $0.28, with lower pricing available for high volume production. An evaluation board, AAEV2021, for testing of either component is available for $75. The AAEV2021 is populated with both components, designed for standalone or breadboard connection for evaluation of either component, as well as provision for resistor or board trace based current measurement for the IPS20. For samples or the evaluation board, please contact your local representative where available, or in the absence of such contact the factory at sales@asicadvantage.com.

The IPS20 and IPS21 are intended to be combined with a power controller implemented on the primary-side of an isolated power conversion system, such as ACDC or DCDC power converters, battery chargers and LED lighting. An extensive, feature varied list of such controllers is available from ASIC Advantage amongst its Controller products in the Power Management family. We recommend you consult the factory or your local representative for a copy of ASIC Advantage’s new 2007-2008 Mixed-Signal IC Short Form for the most comprehensive list of Controllers and other complimentary products available from ASIC Advantage, as well as information regarding new offerings coming through 2008.
