Zero-power CPLDs

EDN Europe, 01 Jan 2008

Altera has designed its MAX IIZ CPLDs to meet the power, package and price demands of the portableapplications market. They have up to six times the density and three times the I/O count of competing traditional macrocell-based CPLDs, Altera says, adding zero-power and ultra-small package options. MAX IIZ devices come in densities of 240 and 570 LEs (logic elements) and in MBGA packages with up to 160 I/Os. They extend the principles of macrocell-based CPLDs by combining non-volatility and instant-on behaviour with a LUT (look-up-table) logic structure. The devices use 1.8V core voltage and six metal layers, and include system features such as user flash memory and an internal oscillator. Design is on the free Quartus II Web Edition software version 7.2, SP1. Production-qualified MAX IIZ EPM240Z M68 devices will begin shipping in the first quarter of 2008 at $1.25 in high volumes. All MAX IIZ devices will be in production by the second quarter of 2008, as will a demonstration and evaluation board. Online design examples are available at www.altera.com/max2example.
